Freeky Friday: Positive Playlist

Welcome back to Freeky Friday! This week's topic:

If you were making a positivity playlist, what three feel good songs would you include?

This topic was a fun one for me because I have so many positivity playlists! There's the "I'm going to go out tonight" positivity playlist, the "I'm going to play outside today" positivity playlist, and the "I had a crappy day and I need to snap out of it" positivity playlist, to name a few. Regardless of the underlying theme, however, there are a few songs that always seem to wiggle their way into my positivity playlists.

Dropkick Murphys - Tessie


The original "Tessie" was written in 1902 for a Broadway musical called The Silver Slipper. It's basically about a woman singing to her pet bird. For some reason, this song caught on among Boston fans. I'm not talking about Red Sox fans...they weren't even the Boston Braves (later relocated to my own ATL) back then! They were the Boston Americans. A group of loyal fans who called themselves the "Royal Rooters" adopted this song as their own rallying cry in 1903. Fun fact: Boston Mayor John Fitzgerald, grandfather of JFK, was a member of the Royal Rooters.

This song supposedly helped the Boston Americans win their first World Series in 1903. Over a century later, it helped the Boston Red Sox win the 2004 World Series, their first in 86 years. You see, a band called the Dropkick Murphys remade the song with the same intent: to rally. They even included back-up vocals from Sox players of the time: Bronson Arroyo, Lenny DiNardo, and he-who-must-not-be-named-but-has-the-initials-JD.

To me, this song represents the classic nature of one of my favorite pastimes. The passion, loyalty, and sheer roller coaster ride involved in true fandom is truly timeless, and it's something that can always put me in a good mood. Plus, there are bagpipes. BAGPIPES.

The Original Cast of Hairspray - Good Morning Baltimore


Okay, so maybe this one doesn't have a fun history like the previous song, but it's pretty damn catchy. I LOVE Broadway. Even though Hairspray isn't my absolute favorite show (don't get me wrong, it's really fun), this song is one of my all-time favorites.

For those who aren't familiar with the show, Hairspray's leading lady is a confident teen who is comfortable in her own skin...despite the fact that everyone around her tells her she should feel otherwise. As the opening number, this song defines our heroine's personality and sets the stage for what she's all about. I like to listen to it first thing in the morning, because it will pump me up for the rest of the day.

311 - Do You Right


It's really hard for me to pick a "favorite" 311 song, but this one's definitely in the top five, maybe even the top three. It just sounds like a beach party, and it's all about having fun with people you love.

Freeking awesome lyrics: I'm free as I stare at the sea, and I'm not coming down. The world is yours once you have found the good is to share, which is elsewhere.
