Even though I'm Jewish, we always celebrated Christmas growing up. My dad is Catholic, and my mom was raised in a country where everyone was Catholic. I apologize if this is insensitive or offensive to Christians, but my mom always taught us about Christmas from a more objective perspective. We learned from an early age that Christmas was about peace, joy, and love for God and your fellow man.
In hindsight, I suppose that's a good way to explain it in an Interfaith household. Now that I'm married to a Christian, we often discuss how we'll handle such an education with our future children. In the meantime, we enjoy creating a festive environment around the house for Christmas, Hanukkah, and the New Year. There are a few images of angels, but for the most part, the theme in our decor is joy and fun. And also Disney.
Yes, our tree topper is the Claymations walrus. We named him Smallrus.
Does your holiday decor have a theme?

I love that table runner!
I love the explanation of Christmas you received as a child...I honestly think that's the absolute truth about it.
I think your mom's explanation is so nice. We don't have a theme this year, last year we did a red, white and snowflake them. Maybe this year is sentimental, since we are using all old school decorations from our families.
Aaaand now I'm homesick. Mostly for Smallrus. And Chelsea.
our theme is "christmas on one intern's salary" :)your place looks so beautiful. Maybe one day...
Melissa & Layla, thanks! I always feel awkward talking about it because I don't want to offend anyone. But at the same time, I appreciate her thoughtfulness.
Amanda, SOON.
LJN, Haha aww...the theme should be Parker's First Christmas on Who Cares What Salary!
Thanks for tipping your hat my way! The house looks great. And DAVE trimming the tree does too! And Amanda, Charlie(dog)is coming with me!!!
Peace on Earth, Good Will Towards All!
Love it! My boyfriend is Jewish, I'm not, our future children will be Jewish but I just cannot give in on Christmas! We're starting to discuss how we want to navigate the holiday season in the (far distant) future, so I love hearing about other people's stories of growing up in interfaith households!
That is such a great explanation, your Mom sounds like a wise lady :) Our main tree is ornaments that I've collected over the years and my mom's Avon ornaments. She gifted them to me when I got my house a few years ago. Our dining room tree has a rustic theme. I found a few ornaments and just had to go with it. Next year I want to add a Disney tree. We went there for our belated honeymoon in September and now I'm Mickey obsessed :) (and I found more old Disney ornaments than I realized I had!)
Love the decor! I have the same mini table runner from Target and I LOVE it!
I LOVE your mom's explanation. My husband is Jewish and I was raised Christian, but I am now agnostic. He feels uncomfortable celebrating Christmas in our household with our children but is ok with celebrating it with my mom/dad outside of our own home. I've tried to explain that we can tell our kids what your mom told you, but he can't wrap his head around it just yet! Thank you for posting.
