A Champion, Revisited

A year ago, Dave and I treated our wedding guests to their choice of margarita, red velvet, and strawberry cupcakes from Miss Mamie's Cupcakes in Marietta Square.

Miss Mamie's was totally on board with my vision of making the cupcakes look colorful and fun, to fit in with our whimsically decorated wedding. Though absolutely adorable, appearance wasn't the reason we chose Miss Mamie's to be one of our wedding vendors. Y'all, I have eaten a lot of cupcakes in my day, and these are my absolute favorite. Turns out, Food Network agrees...Miss Mamie's recently won Cupcake Wars!

Best of all, the cupcakery has recently added the award-winning recipes to their repertoire. Customers can order these now-regular menu items daily. I recently had a birthday surprise in the form of a devil's food cupcake with a tangerine kick, a creation that was inspired by cannoli on Cupcake Wars.

We'd planned on celebrating our one-year anniversary by visiting Miss Mamie's and ordering the same cupcakes we'd had a year ago. Instead, we opted to try more of the new additions.

The cupcake on the left is inspired by an eclair: with cinnamon cake and Nutella frosting. The one on the right is a margarita cupcake, though this one has been amped up a bit since our wedding. It now features a tomato coulis with jalapeño slices! The mixture of spicy and sweet was incredible.

Miss Mamie's Cupcakes deserves all of the success that's coming its way. If you live in ATL and haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet, you're missing out!

Celebrating with Paper

Today is our first wedding anniversary. We celebrated by watching our wedding video, and later today we plan to eat some cupcakes from the baker who made our wedding cupcakes (more on that later). We also exchanged traditional gifts. I have no idea where this tradition came from, but through the power of Google, I learned that the first anniversary is the paper anniversary.

Now, let me just say that there's a lot that went into our wedding. I'm not going to get into every aspect of the planning (because I did that already), but I'll happily summarize with two key points:

1. Our wedding could not have happened without my sister's immense creativity and relentless patience towards me.
2. Every aspect of our wedding was loaded with whimsy.

That being said, it was completely appropriate that my sister decided to follow the paper anniversary tradition by presenting us with a piñata.

Not exactly romantic, but very us.

Bless Their Nest

My husband and I recently attended a wedding/housewarming shower in honor of our good friends, Stephen and Caroline (otherwise known as the collective "Stepholine"). They just bought a home together, and they're getting married this fall, so there's a lot to celebrate!

The shower was held at Caroline's aunt's home in Roswell, a suburb of Atlanta. Caroline's aunt was going for a "Bless Their Nest" theme, as we showered our friends with gifts while surrounded by garden-themed decor with little birdie details. But Caroline's aunt also happens to be from New Orleans, so there was a bit of a "bourbon" sub-theme going on. And I did not have a problem with that.

How gorgeous is that?! This lovely spread included shrimp cocktail, beef tenderloin sandwiches, honeybaked ham sandwiches, and deviled eggs. Everything was delicious!

The foyer featured a wishing tree so that guests could leave marriage advice and what not. I'm pretty sure we just wrote something inappropriate about drinking.

After the nearlyweds opened their gifts, it was time for dessert, which included petit fours, bourbon brownies, and Mexican wedding cookies.

One of my favorite parts of the day was when Caroline's aunt prepared Café Brulot, a New Orleans tradition involving coffee, bourbon, and a match. I have to say, I have been to quite a few showers and I have never seen anything en flambe! This was a very exciting first for me.

Once the bowl of liquor and spices was ignited, Caroline's aunt scooped the flaming mixture into demitasses full of coffee.

I love how we're coincidentally situated in height order. We absolutely love these guys, and can't wait to see them get married in just three months!
