When you walk through the front door of our house, the first room on the left was very empty and very boring.
We decided to make it Dave's office, which meant that the first item on the to do list was to paint it a "legal color."
Recently, we started to furnish it. Dave really wanted cherry wood to go with his merlot walls, so we found a couple of small tables at some antique stores. We found a particleboard desk on Amazon for like $200...hey, it looks like cherry wood and that's close enough! Real cherry wood probably would have tacked a zero onto that price.
My favorite feature in the new room are these brass scales of justice that we found at a flea market.
The room still needs a lot of work. Since it's near the front door, it echoes a lot of noises from the dog terrorizing greeting everyone who comes to our door. An area rug would be nice. Also, we'd like to create built in bookshelves along the long wall. We had someone come out for an estimate, but they suggested it would cost about $7K to do it their way sooo now we're investigating DIY Ikea options on Pinterest. I don't care how we get it done as long as it has a sliding ladder.

Does anyone else share the ladder obsession with me?

We have a sliding ladder in the library in my parents' house! It's pretty bad-ass, not going to lie :)
I would love a room with wall-to-wall bookcases, even sans ladder!
So far the best thing in the room is Chloe! It almost goes without saying.
Have you looked into resale value for a house with built-ins? I want to put them in our bonus room but Jon says that they will hurt the value of having a bonus room. Maybe when he sees how awesome Dave's bookshelves are . . .
It looks lovely :) What a great flea market find as well!
Yes to the sliding ladder!! That color looks great!
Kelly, I think if anything it helps resale value! I know we were pretty psyched that our living room came with built-in shelves. Customization is a good thing :)
And Jill, that IS badass!!!
Coming together well; really looks nice! I wasn't sure of the Merlot but now that there's wood in there. LOVE the scales. Love CHELSEA too [Chole was our 1st dog-Britanny Spaniel your Aunt Sally knew] Poca a poca, it will be complete in time and you are building a showcase. Bottom line on homesales/value-up to the purchaser. Some like builtins some don't. In your type of house, I think it would add. Smart buyers know that anything built in can always be riped out. DIY is always creative and with you two at it, sure it will work well!!!
Sliding ladders for sure! You should check out the IKEA Billy bookcases. You can build a whole wall using these inexpensive pieces. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

This post is creatively done! Very true! The ladder will complete the look, especially if you intend to place several books in that office space! Keep the princess-like ideas coming!
